MMO Business Roundup: Savvy Games CEO, Nvidias AI filter, and PlayStation 5s monetization

Welcome back to another roundup of MMO and MMO-adjacent business news. It’s another wild ‘n’ wooly bundle of items that are kind of in our periphery once again, so it’s time for us to just get into the mud together. Let’s go.

Savvy Games Group’s CEO Brian Ward is stepping down, announcing the move in an internal message sent to staff. Readers no doubt recall this company as the one that scooped up companies in our sphere of gaming, including Pokemon GO from Niantic and made big investments into esports. Turqi Alnowaiser, the deputy director of the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, will be interim acting CEO.

Not only is Nvidia’s DLSS5 AI slop filter making games look markedly worse, but it’s alsotanking PC game frame rates by as much as 50 to 60% across the board. The company is also trying to spin this as progress because the technology used to require two RTX 5090 graphics cards to run but now only needs one, and it promises that improvements are in the works. Sure, Jan.

Finally, we close out withSony’s plan for PlayStation 5 monetization moving forward: According to CEO Hiroki Totoki, the important thing for the company to do right now is “[focus] on recurring revenue from the current user base” and “how to monetize that user base,” particularly from the over 125M PS Plus subscribers and because the console has sold well enough that it doesn’t need to market it aggressively. That’s always a good thing to learn, isn’t it?
